The development of concrete technology has a history of more than 170 years. During the slow development process, there have been several changes. The discovery of the water-cement ratio theorem in 1919, the discovery of air-entraining agents in 1938, and the emergence of superplasticizers in the early 1960s.
At present, the development of concrete technology is in a period of change. The emergence of new admixtures and cementitious materials has made the production of concrete with good workability, excellent mechanical properties and durability a reality. This new type of concrete is called high-performance concrete, or HPC for short. The application of HPC will play an important role in the construction technology of concrete buildings and the performance of concrete structures. Therefore, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Norway and other countries all regard HPC as a new material for the cross-century, and invest a lot of manpower and material resources in research and development.
Since the 1980s, some developed countries have successfully developed HPC, which has enabled concrete to enter the high-tech era, and has received increasing attention from the international materials and engineering circles. Many countries research and use HPC as a new material that crosses the century, making it a hot spot in contemporary concrete research and application.
HPC component materials include cement, coarse and fine aggregates, a variety of mineral admixtures, water and superplasticizers. Its composition and ratio are more complex than ordinary concrete, and the requirements are much higher.
The advantages of HPC:
