However, his progressive ideas and outspokenness led to his exile after falling out of favor with th king, who was influenced by corrupt officials. During his exile, Qu Yuan continued to express his profound love for his country through poetry, producing works that remain influential in Chinese literature to this day.

According to legend, Qu Yuan was devastated upon learning that his beloved state had been conquered by the rival Qin state. In his despair, he committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The local people, deeply moved by his patriotism, raced out in their boats to try to save him, beating drums and throwing rice into the water to keep fish and evil spirits away from his body. This act of searching for Qu Yuan’s body is believed to be the origin of dragon boat racing, and the rice thrown into the water evolved into zongzi, the traditional rice dumplings eaten during the festival.

Aside from the legend of Qu Yuan, the Dragon Boat Festival also has roots in ancient agricultural practices. The festival falls during the summer solstice, a time when people would traditionally offer sacrifices to ensure a good harvest. The dragon boat races, with their vibrant colors and rhythmic drumming, are believed to bring rain and ensure bountiful crops for the coming season. Furthermore, zongzi, a type of glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves, are thought to have originated as offerings to ancestors and spirits for protection and good fortune.
