How to Smooth Concrete Surfaces
May 19 , 2022

When working with concrete, it is imperative to maintain a smooth and consistent surface throughout any work. While this may seem like an obvious and completely self-evident fact, many people simply don't have the right knowledge to make sure this happens. That's why we're here to help inspire and inform our readers with some expert tips and processes that can be used to ensure pristine finishes every time. With just a few in-house skills and the best machines, you can produce flawless concrete areas in no time.

Level The Area

Immediately after the cement is laid, the first step in the process is to level and smooth the surface area. The screed can be done with any instrument that has 2 x 4 plank capability, but an actual screed is recommended. Leveling is done to roughly level the surface and begin the process of creating smooth concrete, while also allowing the area to congeal.

After smoothing the cement, the area should be swept to fill in the holes and level the marks left by the screed. Be careful not to overuse the surface area as this will create a weak finish.

Edge Concrete

After smoothing the surface with the darby, you will watch the water rise to the top of the surface it is on. This is completely normal and is called "bleeding", but you should wait until it dries before continuing. If you continue before the process begins, the surface will eventually weaken. You can test if the bleeding has stopped by pressing your gloved thumb against the cement. If it only makes a quarter-inch impression, then you're good to go. When ready, use an edger to trace the perimeter of the slab and compact the corners.

Float And Smooth Surfaces

Floating and plastering will determine whether your surface will end up being smooth and consistent, or rough and porous. The penultimate step is to float the surface to remove marks due to edge surfaces. For best results, buy a magnesium float for this stage. Sweep the area to further compact the surface and remove traces from earlier work. Use your float to make large arcs to achieve the largest portion of cement and create the best finish.

The final step in creating the perfect surface is to use a steel trowel to create an even and smooth surface. You should allow the board to partially harden before laying the trowel almost flat, raising the edge a bit and swinging in a large overlapping arc while applying pressure. You should lift the edge of the trowel after each complete movement across the surface.
