For different workpiece materials and different processing requirements, different grinding wheels should be used. Even for grinding the same workpiece material, the grinding ratios of different grades of grinding wheels may vary by 2 to 5 times, therefore the appropriate grinding wheel should be selected.
The bonding agents for superabrasive grinding wheels are resin, metal, ceramic, electroplating and brazing. Resin bonded grinding wheels are mainly used for sharpening knife gauges, grinding holes, cylindrical grinding and flat grinding; Metal bonded grinding wheels are used for plunge grinding, shaping grinding of optical curve grinders, grinding single-edged tools, grinding spiral grooves of small drills, and also for electrolytic grinding; Ceramic bonded grinding wheels have the advantages of high grinding efficiency, good shape retention, high durability, easy dressing and long service life. It has become the preferred grinding tool for high-efficiency and high-precision grinding because of its good chemical stability, resistance to heat, oil, acid and alkali erosion, adaptability to various grinding fluids, and low grinding cost; Electroplated grinding wheels are suitable for high-speed fine grinding and profile grinding, as well as for high-efficiency grinding of holes and use on coordinate grinding machines; Brazed grinding wheels are suitable for ultra-high-speed grinding.
It must be pointed out that different grades of abrasives have different strength, thermal stability and crushing characteristics due to different manufacturing processes and different crystal forms and particle shapes, therefore different abrasives should be selected according to the type of bond, grinding workpiece materials and grinding methods. For example, for ceramic bond grinding wheels used for high efficiency and high precision grinding, high strength and sharp particle shape abrasives can be used. There are two kinds of super hard grinding products with and without gold plated metal coat on the surface, which should be selected according to different conditions such as bond type, workpiece material, dry grinding and wet grinding.
The concentration of the starting hard abrasive grinding wheel should not be chosen too low, high concentration can bring high grinding ratio. At present, higher concentrations are used for high speed and high efficiency grinding.
